torc2 Ltd
A private based company, based in United Kingdom, incorporated in 2014, run by a small team of passionate individuals whose collective expertise was initially harnessed to design and develop a range of medical splint and cast devices as directed by Orthopaedic Specialists.
Key to these devices is the use of an innovative torc (Thermodynamic Orthopaedic Re-usable Cast) system which is the subject of:
European Patent NO 3107507– Granted 11th November 2020
The European patent has been through various examinations Withers & Rogers (Patent Attorney) and was finally granted on the 11th November 2020
Following significant R & D, it has become clear that the torc material, with its unique properties, can be adapted to create a range of non-medical products for numerous markets including Crafting, Consumer and Industrial goods.
In late 2018 the company relocated to premises in Rugby, Warwickshire that allows for more extensive R & D through to low scale production.
Medical – Regulated & Non–Regulated
The system uses a blend of materials to create a stable compound that is a malleable putty-like fluid at a temperature that is tolerable to humans but on cooling to body temperature becomes a rigid slightly rubbery material. This ability to re-shape directly on the patient gives torc material its USP.
The process of manipulating this property by heating and cooling varies according to the specific application.
The aim is to develop a rapid bespoke production process that will benefit both the patient in terms of faster delivery, comfort and accuracy of fit, and the clinician in reduced fitting times, lowered returns due to incorrect splint production and the ability to see the splint applied and checked in a single clinic visit.
Developments in filament and ALM (Additive Layer Manufacturing) technologies will enable torc2 to select the most appropriate method dependent on product type and route to market.
The focus of the business is based around Medical Device sectors, three of which are:
- Ankle Foot Orthosis – treatment of children with Cerebral Palsy
- Hip Spica Cast – treatment of children with severe Hip Dysplasia
- Wrist/Hand Splints – treatment for Carpel Tunnel / Repetitive Strain Injury
Currently under development is FlexiWrap®, a product that will work in conjunction with existing gel liners, to offer a solution to ill-fitting prosthetic sockets
The Global Prosthetic Liners Market is projected to grow by 36% over 6 years, from USD 285.2Million in 2020 to USD 387.6 Million by 2026.
The reason for this significant increase is the growing and aging population, increased rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and the awareness of benefits of prosthetic liners in quality of life.
Researchers at the University of Aston found that the NHS spends approximately £60 million per year on service centres for amputation rehabilitation with 55-60,000 attendees **
The product will also alleviate the financial burden of the NHS, as it will reduce the need of producing new prostheses and cut down meetings with clinicians.
